A website tells people about you. A web application lets them get something done. Here is how to tell which one you need.

Many Namibian businesses ask us for “a website” when what they need is a web application — or the other way round. The difference matters, because it changes the budget, the timeline and who needs to be involved.

What a website does

A website presents information: who you are, what you offer, how to contact you. Most content is the same for every visitor. A good business website is fast, easy to update, works well on a phone and is built so people can find it on Google.

What a web application does

A web application lets people complete a task. They sign in, see their own data and change it. Examples from our work in Namibia include a portal where internet customers buy data bundles, a system where citizens log complaints about electricity providers, and a national registration platform for cyclists.

Signs you need a web application

  • Customers or staff need to sign in and see their own information.
  • People submit forms that someone currently re-types into another system.
  • You take payments, bookings or applications online.
  • The system must connect to your billing, ERP or other internal software.
  • You need reports, approvals or an audit trail.

Signs a website is enough

  • Visitors mainly need information and a way to contact you.
  • Content changes a few times a month.
  • Enquiries can go to email or WhatsApp and be handled by a person.

Many businesses need both

A common pattern is a public website for marketing and search, with a secure portal behind a “sign in” button. They can be built and released separately, so you can launch the website now and add the application when the business case is clear.

Running costs to plan for

Both need hosting, a domain, security updates and backups. A web application also needs monitoring, support for its integrations and, often, a support agreement with the developer. Ask for these costs up front so there are no surprises after launch.

Not sure which you need? Describe what your customers or staff are trying to do, and we will tell you honestly which option fits.
